HER
Director: Spike Jonze
My Rating: 9/10
As much as I look to find something to criticize about this film, there is nothing I really want to criticize. Aesthetic beauty accompanied by an entrancing soundtrack and accomplished acting. This story of the pursuit and evolution of mankind set in futurist surroundings seems far fetched - involving a relationship with a man and his computer - yet remains believable in its entirety.
It would be so easy to fuck up this production. Yet, stylistically, the portrayal of the not so distant future is dealt with sophistication and thorough intricacy. I particularly liked the fashion of a Simon Cowell'esque high waist trouser for men.

Moreover, the very idea of a man 'boning' his 'virtual' play thing in this age is a taboo subject which stirs up a mental image of a 40 year old War Hammer collector trying to fit his schnozzle into a well lubricated plug socket whilst playing certain censored scenes from Game of Thrones (sorry, War Hammers fans). Yet, the portrayal of this relationship between Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) and his Operating System (Samantha aka Scarlett Johansson) is extremely earnest and real, for want of a better word.
The thing is, this film has you rooting for Theodore and Samantha to fall in love and make a real go of things, and they do. However, as many love stories go, 'plain sailing' is not a term one would affiliate with this production. And how can it be? This journey is set out to meander to and fro' up until its destination, and is done perfectly. It sees the protagonist grow, adapt and find true happiness in a way in which many of us plainly imagine. It bares witnessed to the corresponding influence two people can have upon one another, ergo, presenting a healthy relationship which harbours growth and evolution.
The ending has a futile inevitability, yet somehow provides joy and sincerity. It displays the limitations of humanistic behaviour, but, perhaps shows its potential to evolve.
This film may cause certain emotive urges, for instance, the urge to give your ex a call and forgive him/her, maybe even apologise, or even give Siri a little buzz to see what she's been up to lately and if possibly if she wasn't doing anything else she'd maybe want to go out for a drink or something, maybe? Whatever it does though, it's a fucking sick film and I'm glad I watched it alone so no one was here to see me cry. Also, another shout out to the soundtrack (Arcade Fire - 'Her' (Soundtrack)), I hope it receives an Oscar, as well as Phoenix, Jonze, and everyone else I've failed to mention because this is my first review and is probably a pile of horse manure.
PEOPLE I HAVE NOT MENTIONED BUT ARE ALSO VERY GOOD IN THIS FILM:
AMY ADAMS - AMY
CHRIS PRATT - PAUL
OLIVIA WILDE - NOT SURE THE NAME OF THE CHARACTER SHE PLAYS BUT SHE'S REALLY GOOD AND VERY VERY HOT.
Last thoughts...
'Her' has made me feel happy, and then very sad, then very very happy then very very sad and then confused and then hurt and then jealous but the I understand again and then I'm content and then ultimately I am happy.
Thanks anyway.
